Technique Mastery

In this class, you will be learning practical drawing skills, from still life to portraits, any topic you would like to dig into.

Basic Shapes and Lines

  • Practice drawing circles, ovals, rectangles, triangles, and straight or curved lines.

  • Combine basic shapes to form simple objects like houses, trees, or animals.

Construction Drawing

  • Learn to break down complicated subjects into stacks of simple shapes.

  • Try sketching fruit (as circles or ovals), books (as boxes), or fish (as combined ovals and triangles).

Proportion and Measurement

  • Use techniques for comparing sizes and spaces between parts of an object.

  • Simple exercise: draw a flower and measure each petal's length or compare proportions in a face.

Perspective and Space

  • Begin with one-point perspective (drawing a road or a box receding into the distance).

  • Draw cubes or simple scenes, placing objects near and far.

Contour Drawing

  • Focus on outlining a subject with a continuous line.

  • Practice tracing the outlines of your hand, favorite mug, or leaves.

Shading and Value

  • Try shading simple shapes (spheres, cubes) with pencil to make them appear 3D.

  • Experiment with gradients and shadow under objects.

Simple Still Life

  • Arrange and draw a group of basic objects (like a cup, an apple, and a book).

  • Focus on shape, proportions, and light.
